Kolmanskop Namibia was a diamond mining town founded in the early 1900s after German railroad workers found diamonds along the track they were building. The town was built in a decidedly German style and had about 400 residents. Richer strikes in other areas followed by WWII led to the town’s downfall. The last residents left in 1956 and the desert has taken over.
The town is now open to tourists. Tickets must be bought at the front gate. It has been the setting in several TV shows, movies and photoshoots since then.
